When forests are cleared, not only do the trees disappear, but also the diverse array of organisms that rely on these ecosystems for survival. For instance, the Amazon rainforest is home to millions of different species, many of which cannot survive outside their native habitat. As a result, deforestation has led to the extinction of countless species and threatens the existence of thousands more.

Secondly, deforestation alters ecosystems significantly by reducing the availability of resources such as food, water, and shelter for various organisms.
