IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: Is technology increasing or decreasing social inequality?

Model Answer:
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the development and usage of technology. While some argue that this progress is contributing to the reduction of social inequality, others contend that it is exacerbating existing disparities. In this essay, I will analyze both perspectives and provide evidence to support my viewpoint.

On one hand, technology has the potential to increase social equality by providing access to information, education, and resources for people from all walks of life. For instance, online learning platforms have made it possible for individuals in underprivileged areas to gain knowledge and skills previously available only to those with financial means. Additionally, technological advancements in healthcare have improved the quality of life for millions of people worldwide, regardless of their socio-economic status.

On the other hand, critics argue that technology is disproportionately benefiting the wealthy, thereby increasing social inequality. The digital divide is a prime example of this phenomenon. While affluent individuals have easy access to high-speed internet and cutting-edge devices, those in lower socioeconomic groups often lack such resources, creating a technological disparity that perpetuates existing inequalities. Moreover, the rise of automation and artificial intelligence could lead to mass unemployment, disproportionately affecting low-skilled workers who may struggle to adapt to these changes.

In conclusion, while technology holds the potential to bridge the gap between social classes, it is currently doing more harm than good in terms of social equality. The digital divide and the potential for job displacement due to automation indicate that we need to prioritize ensuring equal access to technological advancements in order to create a more equitable society.
