Task: Write an essay on the topic "Is cultural assimilation necessary for social cohesion?"
Model Answer:
Cultural assimilation is a process in which individuals or groups of different cultures adopt the culture, language, customs and values of another group to become part of the majority's mainstream society. The question arises whether cultural assimilation is necessary for social cohesion. In this essay, I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of cultural assimilation and whether it plays a significant role in fostering social cohesion.
On one hand, cultural assimilation has several benefits that can contribute to social cohesion. Firstly, it helps in creating a unified national identity which strengthens the feeling of belonging to a common nation. This is particularly important in multicultural societies where various ethnic groups reside. For example, in Canada, the policy of multiculturalism aims at encouraging cultural assimilation so that immigrants can fully integrate into Canadian society and contribute to social cohesion. Secondly, assimilating into a new culture can help individuals adapt more easily to their new surroundings, overcoming language barriers and understanding societal norms, ultimately reducing the chances of discrimination and prejudice. This integration leads to greater acceptance among different cultural groups, creating a harmonious and cohesive society.
On the other hand, there are arguments against the necessity of cultural assimilation for social cohesion. One point of view is that cultural diversity should be celebrated rather than assimilated. A diverse society can benefit from the exchange of ideas, customs and traditions among different cultural groups. This diversity can stimulate innovation, creativity and cultural growth, leading to a richer and more vibrant society. For instance, India, with its multitude of languages, religions and ethnicities, is known for its vibrant culture that thrives on the coexistence and mutual respect among diverse communities.
Furthermore, imposing cultural assimilation may lead to a loss of original cultural identity, causing individuals or groups to feel marginalized or alienated. This can create tensions and conflicts within society rather than fostering social cohesion. The historical treatment of indigenous people in various parts of the world serves as an example where forced assimilation led to significant social discord and division.
In conclusion, while cultural assimilation has its benefits in promoting social cohesion by creating a shared national identity and reducing discrimination, it is not always necessary. A society can thrive on cultural diversity, which fosters innovation, creativity and mutual respect among different groups. However, the key to maintaining social harmony lies in striking a balance between respecting and preserving individual cultural identities while promoting cohesion and unity within a nation.
