In this essay, I will examine both sides of the argument and provide my own perspective on whether cultural appropriation should be considered a form of racism or not.

Cultural appropriation refers to the adoption or borrowing of elements of one culture by individuals from another culture, often without proper understanding or respect for their significance. Critics argue that this practice is inherently racist because it involves taking aspects of a marginalized culture without recognizing or valuing its historical and social context. For example, wearing traditional Native American headdresses at music festivals can be seen as a form of cultural appropriation, as it reduces the meaningful symbol to a mere fashion accessory devoid of its cultural significance.

On the other hand, proponents of cultural appropriation argue that it is an essential aspect of globalization and cultural exchange. They contend that individuals should be free to express themselves through various cultural elements without fear of backlash or accusations of racism. For instance, wearing a kimono or enjoying sushi does not necessarily equate to cultural appropriation; rather, it demonstrates an appreciation for another culture and fosters cross-cultural understanding.

In my opinion, while cultural appropriation can sometimes be seen as a form of racism when taken out of context or without proper respect for the culture being borrowed from, it is not inherently racist.
