IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: "Is society becoming more or less concerned about income inequality?"
Model Answer:
In recent years, there has been a growing awareness and concern regarding income inequality across the globe. This can be attributed to various factors such as increased access to information through social media, the rise of globalisation, and the impact of economic crises on different sections of society. While some may argue that this concern is exaggerated or misplaced, it is undeniable that the issue has come under a magnifying glass in recent times.
The first reason for this growing concern is the rise of social media platforms and their influence on public opinion. Through social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, people from all walks of life can share their thoughts, opinions, and personal experiences with the world. As a result, individuals who have been affected by income inequality are able to voice their concerns and raise awareness about the issue. This has led to an increased understanding among the general public about the magnitude and consequences of income disparity.
Secondly, globalisation has played a significant role in exacerbating income inequality. With the rapid expansion of multinational corporations and the liberalisation of trade policies, wealth has become increasingly concentrated at the top echelons of society. This has led to widespread criticism from various quarters, including activists, academics, and policymakers. As a result, there is growing pressure on governments to implement policies that address the root causes of income inequality, such as progressive taxation and investments in social welfare programs.
Lastly, economic crises have exposed the vulnerability of those at the lower end of the income spectrum. Events like the 2008 financial crisis and recent recessions have disproportionately affected low-income earners and caused a sharp increase in poverty rates. These events have served as wake-up calls for many, highlighting the importance of addressing income inequality to create a more equitable and stable society.
In conclusion, society is indeed becoming more concerned about income inequality due to factors such as increased access to information through social media, the effects of globalisation, and the consequences of economic crises. This growing concern has led to an increased emphasis on finding solutions that address the root causes of income disparity, and it is expected that this issue will continue to occupy a central place in public discourse and policy debates.
