IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic:"Is society becoming more or less supportive of diversity?"
Model Answer:
In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on the importance of embracing and promoting diversity in various aspects of life. This essay will argue that society is indeed becoming more supportive of diversity, although there are still challenges to overcome. There are several factors contributing to this shift in attitude, including increased awareness, legislation, and globalization.
Firstly, increased awareness has played a significant role in fostering support for diversity. Media campaigns, educational programs, and public discourse have raised understanding and empathy towards different groups. For instance, the Black Lives Matter movement has brought attention to racial inequality, prompting many people to re-evaluate their views on race and ethnicity. This growing awareness has led to a more inclusive and accepting society, which is indicative of an increased support for diversity.
Secondly, legislation has been introduced to protect and promote diversity. Governments around the world have enacted anti-discrimination laws that prohibit discrimination based on race, religion, gender, and other factors. Additionally, policies such as affirmative action in education and employment have been implemented to ensure equal opportunities for underrepresented groups. The existence of these laws demonstrates a commitment from society to create an environment where diversity is not just accepted but actively encouraged.
Lastly, globalization has facilitated the exchange of ideas, cultures, and practices across borders, leading to a more diverse and interconnected world. The increased mobility of people, goods, and services has exposed societies to new perspectives and ways of life. This cross-cultural interaction has contributed to a greater appreciation for diversity and a shift away from ethnocentric views.
Despite these positive developments, there are still challenges that must be addressed in order to further promote diversity. For instance, stereotypes and prejudice continue to persist, which can hinder the acceptance of diverse groups. Additionally, political divisions and nationalism may fuel a resurgence of ethnocentric attitudes. To overcome these obstacles, ongoing education and dialogue are essential to create a society that truly embraces diversity.
In conclusion, it is evident that society is becoming more supportive of diversity due to increased awareness, legislation, and globalization. While there are challenges remaining, the trend suggests that the future will continue to see greater acceptance and celebration of diversity.
