In recent years, the rise of social media platforms has significantly impacted the way people participate in politics and engage with political issues. This essay will explore several key ways in which social media has altered political participation and engagement, including the democratisation of information access, increased public awareness, the formation of new political movements, and the potential for misinformation and polarisation.
Firstly, social media has democratised the way people access information about politics. Previously, the primary source of news and political information was traditional media outlets, such as newspapers, radio, and television. These channels often had a conservative bias or were controlled by government entities, limiting the flow of information to the public. Social media, however, has levelled the playing field, allowing individuals to share news stories and political opinions with a broader audience. For instance, Twitter users can retweet news articles or create their own hashtags to raise awareness about specific issues. This democratisation of information access has empowered ordinary citizens to engage in political discourse and participate in politics more actively than ever before.
Secondly, social media has raised public awareness and facilitated a greater level of political engagement. Before the advent of social media, people were limited in their ability to follow and discuss politics outside of scheduled news broadcasts or election campaigns. Now, through Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms, individuals can join online forums, participate in polls, and voice their opinions on political issues at any time. For example, a grassroots campaign against a controversial policy might use Facebook to organise protests, disseminate information, and mobilise supporters.
Thirdly, social media has given rise to new political movements that may not have emerged otherwise. By connecting people with shared interests and values, social media platforms can provide the foundation for the formation of activist groups or political parties.
