Topic: Overfishing - The Greatest Threat to Marine Ecosystems?

Question: Some people believe overfishing is the greatest threat to marine ecosystems, while others argue that other factors such as climate change, pollution, and habitat destruction are more significant. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion on whether overfishing or other factors pose a greater threat to marine ecosystems.

Model Answer:

Overfishing has become one of the most pressing issues facing marine ecosystems today. It is argued that it poses a great threat, but there are also those who believe that other factors, such as climate change and habitat destruction, pose an even greater threat. In this essay, I will analyze both views and provide my own opinion on the matter.

On one hand, overfishing has been identified as a major concern for marine ecosystems. The rapid depletion of fish stocks due to unsustainable fishing practices has led to the decline in the number of species in our oceans. This not only affects the food chain but also disrupts the balance within marine ecosystems, leading to the extinction of certain species. Additionally, overfishing can cause a ripple effect on other aspects of the environment, such as coastal communities that rely heavily on fishing for their livelihoods.

On the other hand, it is important not to underestimate the impact of factors like climate change and pollution. Rising sea temperatures due to global warming have caused disruptions in the breeding cycles of marine species, leading to further decline in fish populations. Moreover, the increasing amount of plastic waste and other pollutants in our oceans has led to significant damage to marine life, both directly through ingestion of plastics and indirectly by altering the chemical balance of seawater.

While overfishing is undoubtedly a major concern for marine ecosystems, it may not be the greatest threat when considering other factors such as climate change and pollution. Factors like rising sea temperatures, acidification of oceans, and plastic waste are equally, if not more, damaging to our marine environment.

In conclusion, it is essential to recognize that overfishing poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems; however, we cannot disregard the impact of other factors like climate change and pollution. A multifaceted approach that addresses all these concerns is necessary to protect our oceans for future generations.

As an IELTS examiner, I would give this model answer a Band Score of 9 due to its clarity in presenting the topic, logical development of ideas, appropriate use of examples and evidence, cohesion and coherence throughout the essay, and the effective conclusion that addresses the prompt's requirements.
