Firstly, economic growth has been a primary concern of many governments as it leads to a higher quality of life, employment opportunities, and increased national wealth. Critics of prioritizing environmental sustainability argue that focusing on economic growth is essential for developing nations to raise their citizens' standards of living. For instance, China has experienced rapid economic growth in recent decades, lifting millions out of poverty and providing access to basic amenities such as healthcare and education. However, this growth has come at a significant cost to the environment, with pollution levels rising dramatically and natural resources being depleted.

On the other hand, environmental sustainability is crucial for preserving the Earth's ecosystems and preventing the collapse of essential systems, such as the water cycle and food chains.
