IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: Is technology increasing or decreasing social inequality?

Model Answer:

In today's world, technology plays a pivotal role in shaping the way we live and interact with one another. The rapid development and widespread use of technology have sparked debates regarding whether it is contributing to an increase or decrease in social inequality. In this essay, I will argue that while technology has the potential to reduce social inequality, its current implementation often exacerbates existing disparities.

On one hand, technology can be seen as a tool for levelling the playing field and promoting social equality. For instance, advancements in education technology, such as online courses and digital resources, provide people from all walks of life with access to quality learning opportunities that were previously unavailable. Additionally, the rise of e-commerce has created new avenues for entrepreneurship and economic empowerment, especially among marginalized groups.

However, these potential benefits are often overshadowed by the ways in which technology can perpetuate social inequality. For example, the digital divide – the gap between those who have access to digital technologies and those who do not – is a significant factor in exacerbating socio-economic disparities. Those with lower incomes or from rural areas are less likely to have reliable internet access, which in turn limits their opportunities to benefit from online resources and platforms. This digital divide disproportionately affects disadvantaged communities, as they often lack the necessary infrastructure and financial means to acquire technology.

Moreover, technology has given rise to a new form of income inequality. The demand for skilled workers in fields such as software development, artificial intelligence, and data analysis has led to a widening wage gap between high-skilled and low-skilled workers. This is especially true in the context of automation, where jobs that require routine tasks are at risk of being replaced by machines, while creative and problem-solving roles become more valuable. As a result, those who possess the skills to thrive in this digital age are increasingly better off, while others are left behind in the race for economic mobility.

In conclusion, while technology has the potential to reduce social inequality, its current implementation often serves to exacerbate existing disparities. The digital divide and growing income inequality, particularly among skilled and unskilled workers, highlight the need for more equitable distribution of resources and opportunities in our increasingly technological world.
