This essay will analyze the detrimental effects of bullying on a student's school life and provide evidence to support the claim that victims of bullying are more likely to underperform academically.

Firstly, the psychological toll of bullying can significantly hinder a student's ability to focus on their studies. Bullying often leads to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem in its victims (Boulton & Underwood, 2004). These mental health issues may cause students to disengage from their schoolwork and become less motivated to excel academically. Moreover, the constant stress and fear associated with bullying can lead to absenteeism, which further impacts a student's academic progress (Hawker & Boulton, 2006).

Secondly, the social consequences of bullying may also affect a victim's academic performance. As victims often experience isolation and rejection within their peer groups, they are less likely to seek help from classmates or participate in group activities, which can hinder collaboration and group learning experiences (Perry & Kusel, 2002). Additionally, victims of bullying may feel a sense of helplessness and hopelessness, leading them to withdraw from extracurricular activities that might otherwise enrich their learning experience (Smith et al., 2008).
