IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic:"Is society becoming more or less divided along economic lines?"
Model Answer:
In recent years, there has been a growing perception that society is becoming increasingly divided along economic lines. This division, often referred to as the widening gap between the rich and the poor, can be attributed to various factors such as globalization, technological advancements, and government policies.
On one hand, it can be argued that this divide is exacerbated by the process of globalization. The integration of national economies into a single global market has allowed multinational corporations to exploit low-cost labor markets in developing countries, thereby increasing wealth disparities between nations and within societies. Additionally, the offshoring of jobs, particularly those involving lower skill sets, has led to unemployment and underemployment in some regions, further contributing to the widening economic gap.
On the other hand, technological advancements have also played a significant role in shaping this divide. As technology progresses, it often requires highly skilled workers who can adapt to new technologies and industries. Consequently, those possessing such skills are rewarded with higher salaries and better job opportunities, while those without the necessary qualifications or skill set find themselves struggling to secure stable employment. This dynamic creates a self-perpetuating cycle where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
Moreover, government policies have played a part in deepening this economic divide. For instance, tax structures that favor the wealthy, coupled with social welfare programs that provide only minimal support to the less privileged, have contributed to the exacerbation of socio-economic disparities. Furthermore, public investment in education and healthcare systems is often skewed in favor of affluent communities, which in turn perpetuates the cycle of inequality by ensuring that those already privileged continue to thrive while others are left behind.
In conclusion, it can be argued that society is indeed becoming more divided along economic lines due to factors such as globalization, technological advancements, and government policies. To address this issue, a more equitable distribution of wealth and resources, as well as comprehensive social welfare programs, must be implemented in order to ensure that all members of society are given the opportunity to prosper and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
