IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: "Is society becoming more or less divided along economic lines?"
Model Answer:
In recent years, there has been growing concern about the increasing division of society along economic lines. While some argue that this phenomenon is a natural result of globalization and technological advancements, others contend that it is primarily due to political decisions and social policies. In this essay, I will analyze the factors contributing to this division and assess whether or not it has become more pronounced in contemporary society.
On one hand, the rapid pace of globalization and technological advancements have created new opportunities for economic growth and prosperity. As a result, a significant portion of the world's population has experienced a marked improvement in their standard of living. However, this progress has not been evenly distributed across all segments of society. In many cases, those with access to education, capital, and social networks have been able to take full advantage of these opportunities, while others have been left behind. This disparity has given rise to an increasingly polarized society where the gap between the rich and the poor is growing wider.
Furthermore, political decisions and social policies have played a significant role in exacerbating economic divisions within society. For instance, the implementation of neoliberal economic policies in various countries has led to the privatization of public services, reduced government spending on social welfare programs, and deregulation of labor markets. These measures have disproportionately benefited the affluent at the expense of the less fortunate. As a result, income inequality has become more pronounced, with the top 1% of earners amassing an increasingly larger share of global wealth.
On the other hand, it is important to acknowledge that some efforts have been made to mitigate economic divisions. Governments and non-governmental organizations have implemented a range of initiatives aimed at promoting social mobility and reducing income disparities. These include policies such as progressive taxation, subsidized housing, and access to quality education for all. While the impact of these measures may not be immediately evident, they represent important steps towards creating a more equitable society.
In conclusion, while it is true that globalization and technological advancements have created new opportunities for economic growth, these benefits have not been evenly distributed across all segments of society. Instead, political decisions and social policies have played a significant role in exacerbating economic divisions. However, there are also ongoing efforts to address this issue through various policy interventions. As such, whether or not society is becoming more divided along economic lines depends on the balance between these competing forces.
