IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: The role of urban green spaces in improving air quality
Question: Some people argue that urban green spaces play a significant role in improving air quality, while others believe that their impact is minimal. Discuss both sides of the argument and give your own opinion.
Model Answer:
Urban green spaces have been increasingly recognized as essential components of modern cities due to their potential to improve air quality. While some argue that their impact on air quality is negligible, others contend that they can significantly mitigate urban air pollution. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives and present my own viewpoint.
On one hand, proponents of urban green spaces assert that these areas play a pivotal role in enhancing air quality by acting as natural filters for pollutants. Trees, plants, and grass absorb harmful substances such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, which are released into the atmosphere through human activities like vehicle emissions and industrial processes. By absorbing these pollutants, urban green spaces can effectively reduce their concentration in the air and improve overall air quality. Additionally, green spaces can enhance air circulation by providing shade and wind breaks, preventing the accumulation of pollutants near the ground level.
Conversely, critics of urban green spaces argue that their contribution to improved air quality is relatively minor compared to other factors. They contend that the primary sources of air pollution in cities are industrial activities, vehicle emissions, and the burning of fossil fuels for energy production. As such, the impact of urban green spaces on air quality is marginal at best, and resources would be better allocated towards addressing these root causes of pollution.
In my opinion, while it is true that urban green spaces have a limited impact on overall air quality in comparison to the primary sources of pollution, their significance should not be underestimated. The absorption of pollutants by plants and trees can reduce local concentrations of harmful substances, thereby improving air quality for residents in nearby areas. Moreover, the presence of green spaces can contribute to a healthier lifestyle by promoting physical activity and reducing stress, both of which have indirect benefits on overall health and well-being.
In conclusion, urban green spaces can play a valuable role in mitigating air pollution and enhancing the quality of life for city dwellers. While it is crucial to address the root causes of air pollution through policy and regulatory measures, the inclusion of more green spaces in cities should not be overlooked as an effective strategy to improve air quality.
