IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: Should governments prioritize renewable energy over fossil fuels?
Model Answer:
In today's world, the need for sustainable energy sources is becoming increasingly important due to the adverse environmental impacts of traditional energy production methods. Fossil fuels have been the primary source of energy for centuries, but their continued use is now seen as a major contributor to global warming and other environmental issues. As a result, many argue that governments should prioritize renewable energy over fossil fuels. In this essay, I will discuss the advantages of both renewable and non-renewable energy sources and provide my opinion on whether or not governments should prioritize one over the other.
Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal power have several benefits. Firstly, they are virtually inexhaustible, meaning that they can provide a continuous supply of energy for generations to come. Secondly, they produce minimal greenhouse gas emissions, which helps to mitigate the effects of climate change. Lastly, renewable energy technologies create jobs and stimulate economic growth, as seen in countries like Germany and China, which have made significant investments in this sector.
On the other hand, fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas have been the backbone of industrial societies for centuries. They are abundant, widely available, and relatively affordable. Moreover, they are highly efficient energy sources that can power various industries and support economic growth. However, their extraction and consumption have significant environmental consequences, such as air pollution, oil spills, and greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change.
In my opinion, governments should prioritize renewable energy over fossil fuels due to the long-term benefits that it offers. Although fossil fuels are currently essential for meeting global energy demands, their negative environmental impact outweighs any short-term economic advantages. Investing in renewable energy sources not only helps to mitigate climate change but also creates new job opportunities and fosters sustainable economic growth.
In conclusion, while both renewable and non-renewable energy sources have their merits, it is crucial for governments to prioritize the development and implementation of renewable energy technologies. By doing so, they can ensure a more sustainable future for generations to come while addressing the pressing issue of climate change.
