Task 2: In your own words, write an essay on the following topic: "Some people believe that society is becoming more engaged in political activism, while others argue that it is less engaged. Discuss both views and give your own opinion."
Model Answer:
In recent years, there has been a growing debate about whether society is becoming more or less engaged in political activism. Some argue that political activism is on the rise, with people taking an increasingly active role in shaping the political landscape. Conversely, others contend that engagement in political activism is waning due to various factors such as apathy and a focus on personal matters. This essay will discuss both perspectives and provide my own opinion on the matter.
On one hand, it can be argued that society is becoming more engaged in political activism. The rise of social media has undoubtedly played a significant role in this development. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have enabled people to connect with others who share their views, fostering a sense of community and empowering individuals to voice their opinions on political matters. Additionally, the increasing accessibility of information through digital channels has allowed for greater awareness of global issues, which may encourage more people to take action. Furthermore, younger generations, particularly "Generation Z," are known for their strong commitment to social justice and environmental causes, suggesting that they are likely to engage in political activism.
On the other hand, it can also be argued that society is becoming less engaged in political activism. Some attribute this decline to a growing sense of apathy towards politics, particularly among younger generations. The complex nature of modern politics and the proliferation of misinformation may contribute to this apathy, making it difficult for people to feel invested in political issues. Moreover, the focus on personal matters such as career advancement, financial stability, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance may divert attention from political activism. Additionally, the rise of populist leaders and their divisive rhetoric can create an environment where individuals are less inclined to participate in collective political actions.
In my opinion, while it is true that society has witnessed both increases and decreases in political activism, overall, I believe that engagement is on the rise. The accessibility of information and the rise of social media have undoubtedly provided a platform for more individuals to voice their opinions and become politically active. However, it is crucial to recognize that this engagement may not necessarily translate into effective change or long-term commitment. It is important to continue fostering an environment where political activism is encouraged and valued to ensure a more informed and engaged citizenry.
