Task 2 Writing:Title: Should cultural landmarks be protected from development?

Question: Some people argue that cultural landmarks should be preserved at all costs, while others believe that their protection can hinder economic growth and progress. Discuss both sides of the argument and give your own opinion.

Model Answer:

Cultural landmarks play a significant role in preserving the history and heritage of a nation. These landmarks not only serve as important symbols of national pride but also attract tourists from all around the world, thereby contributing to the local economy. However, the protection of these sites can sometimes obstruct economic growth and development. In this essay, I will examine both sides of the argument and give my own opinion on whether or not cultural landmarks should be protected from development.

On one hand, it is important to protect cultural landmarks as they are a reflection of a nation's history and identity. For example, the ancient city of Pompeii in Italy provides an invaluable insight into Roman civilization. Preserving such sites helps to maintain cultural continuity and ensures that future generations can learn from the past. Furthermore, these landmarks contribute significantly to tourism. The Colosseum in Rome, for instance, attracts millions of visitors every year, generating substantial income for the local economy.

On the other hand, the protection of cultural landmarks may come at the expense of economic growth and progress. As cities expand and modernize, the need for new infrastructure and development often conflicts with the preservation of these sites. For instance, in order to build a metro system in Seoul, South Korea, parts of the historic city wall had to be demolished. In such cases, prioritizing economic development over the protection of cultural landmarks may seem necessary.

In my opinion, it is crucial to strike a balance between preserving cultural heritage and facilitating economic growth. This can be achieved by incorporating cultural landmarks into new urban developments or finding innovative ways to revitalize these sites without compromising their historical significance. For example, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, has successfully transformed an industrial wasteland into a vibrant cultural and tourist destination while also preserving the architectural integrity of its surroundings.

In conclusion, cultural landmarks are invaluable assets that should be protected from development. However, it is essential to find ways to balance economic growth with the preservation of these sites so as not to hinder progress. By integrating historical landmarks into modern urban planning and finding creative solutions for their revitalization, we can ensure the continued existence of our cultural heritage while also fostering sustainable economic development.
