IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: "Should governments prioritize environmental protection over economic growth?"
Model Answer:
In recent years, there has been an increasing debate about whether governments should prioritize environmental protection over economic growth. While it is true that a strong economy can provide the resources needed to implement effective environmental policies, it is also important to recognize that unchecked economic growth can lead to irreversible damage to the environment. In this essay, I will argue that governments must strike a balance between the two in order to create a sustainable future for all.
On one hand, economic growth is essential for the well-being of a nation's citizens. A strong economy provides job opportunities, reduces poverty, and improves the overall quality of life. For instance, countries with thriving economies can afford to invest in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, which ultimately contribute to a higher standard of living. Moreover, economic growth often leads to technological advancements that can help mitigate environmental issues, such as renewable energy sources and pollution control technologies.
However, the pursuit of unchecked economic growth has its downsides. Rapid industrialization, urbanization, and consumerism contribute significantly to environmental degradation, including deforestation, air and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity. Furthermore, resource extraction and excessive consumption of non-renewable resources can lead to the depletion of natural capital, which in turn affects future generations' ability to meet their basic needs.
Governments must therefore strike a balance between economic growth and environmental protection. This can be achieved through sustainable development policies that focus on meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. For example, governments can implement regulations that promote responsible resource management, invest in renewable energy sources, and encourage eco-friendly practices among businesses and consumers.
In conclusion, it is clear that prioritizing environmental protection over economic growth alone is not the solution. Instead, a balanced approach that acknowledges the importance of both aspects is necessary to ensure a sustainable future for all. Governments should adopt policies that promote economic growth while simultaneously protecting the environment, so that future generations can enjoy the benefits of a healthy and thriving planet.
