Furthermore, political polarization and divisive rhetoric have created an "us vs. them" mentality, which can undermine efforts to foster understanding and compassion across social, cultural, and economic divides.

In conclusion, while it is evident that there are factors in society that promote greater empathy and understanding, such as increased awareness of global issues and the rise of social media, it is equally important to recognize the impact of individualism and self-interest on the level of compassion among people. Ultimately, whether society is becoming more or less empathetic depends on a delicate balance between these opposing forces.
