On one hand, social norms can be a positive force in society as they promote cooperation and harmony among individuals. For instance, the norm of greeting others with a smile or nod of acknowledgment fosters a sense of community and mutual respect. Additionally, social norms encourage adherence to moral standards and ethical behavior by discouraging actions that might harm others or disrupt societal equilibrium. For example, in many cultures, it is considered impolite to interrupt someone while they are speaking, which upholds the principle of listening and respecting other people's opinions.

On the other hand, social norms can also exert a negative influence on society by perpetuating unfair practices or reinforcing stereotypes.
