In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own view on the matter.

Firstly, supporters of government funding argue that cultural festivals play a vital role in preserving national identity and fostering social cohesion. By sponsoring such events, governments can help ensure that diverse cultures are celebrated and respected, thus promoting understanding among different communities. For example, the annual Indian Festival of Lights, Diwali, is not only an essential religious celebration for Hindus but also a symbol of unity and harmony among Indians residing in various countries around the world. Moreover, these festivals contribute significantly to tourism, which can have a positive impact on local economies.

On the other hand, critics argue that it is the responsibility of private organizations or individuals to fund cultural festivals as they are primarily concerned with making profits. They contend that if cultural events are self-sustaining, they will continue to thrive regardless of government support.
