For instance, the financial crisis of 2008 raised significant questions about the integrity and competence of financial institutions, leading many to lose faith in these entities. Additionally, high-profile cases such as the Watergate scandal in the United States and the recent data breaches at companies like Facebook have further eroded public trust in governmental and corporate institutions. Moreover, the increasing polarization of political views and the rise of alternative media sources have contributed to a decline in trust by fostering an environment where people are more likely to question the motives behind institutional actions.

On the other hand, it is also possible that society's lack of trust in institutions is not as pervasive as it seems. For example, surveys have shown that while trust in certain sectors such as politics and media has indeed declined, trust in other areas like science and healthcare remains relatively stable or even on the rise.
