IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: The importance of reducing carbon emissions from transportation.
Question: In what ways can reducing carbon emissions from transportation help combat climate change, and what challenges need to be addressed in order to achieve this goal?
Model Answer:
Over the past few decades, the world has witnessed a significant increase in global temperatures due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide (CO₂), in the Earth's atmosphere. One of the main contributors to this problem is transportation, with its increasing reliance on fossil fuels. In this essay, we will explore how reducing carbon emissions from transportation can help combat climate change and discuss some of the challenges that need to be addressed to achieve this goal.
Firstly, cutting down on CO₂ emissions from transportation can have a substantial impact on reducing global temperatures. The transport sector is responsible for approximately 15% of total CO₂ emissions worldwide, with road vehicles alone accounting for over
70% of these emissions. By implementing measures such as promoting electric and hybrid vehicles, improving public transportation systems, and encouraging the use of renewable energy sources like solar or wind power for charging stations, we can significantly reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by the transport sector.
Secondly, reducing carbon emissions from transportation can improve air quality and human health. High levels of CO₂ in the atmosphere not only contribute to climate change but also cause respiratory issues in humans, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions. By minimizing our reliance on fossil fuels in the transport sector, we can reduce air pollution and create a healthier environment for everyone.
Despite the numerous benefits of reducing carbon emissions from transportation, several challenges need to be addressed in order to achieve this goal. One significant challenge is the high cost of transitioning to cleaner modes of transport, such as electric vehicles (EVs) and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. These technologies are currently more expensive than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, making it difficult for many people to afford them. Governments and private companies need to invest in research and development to make these alternatives more accessible and affordable for consumers.
Another challenge is the lack of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. With a growing number of EVs on the roads, there is an increasing demand for charging stations. However, current charging infrastructure is limited, particularly in rural areas, which can be a major obstacle to the widespread adoption of EVs. To overcome this issue, governments should invest in expanding charging networks across all regions and promote the installation of chargers in public spaces such as shopping centers, parking lots, and office buildings.
In conclusion, reducing carbon emissions from transportation is crucial for combating climate change and improving air quality and human health. While there are challenges to be addressed, such as making clean transport alternatives more affordable and expanding charging infrastructure, these obstacles can be overcome with the right combination of government policies, private sector investment, and public awareness campaigns. By working together, we can create a sustainable future where transportation is no longer a significant contributor to climate change.
