Writing Task 2 Topic: The role of NGOs in addressing social issues

Question: Some people argue that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a significant role in tackling various social issues, while others believe that governments should be responsible for resolving these problems. Discuss both sides of the argument and give your own opinion on this matter.

Model Answer:

In recent years, there has been an increasing recognition of the importance of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in addressing various social issues. While some argue that governments should bear the primary responsibility for resolving these problems, others believe that NGOs are better equipped to tackle them due to their flexibility and ability to act quickly. In this essay, both perspectives will be discussed, and a conclusion will be drawn regarding the role of NGOs in addressing social issues.

On one hand, it is argued that governments should be responsible for resolving social issues as they have the necessary resources, infrastructure, and authority to implement effective solutions. Governments can pass legislation and allocate funds to programs that directly address these problems, such as poverty alleviation, education reform, or environmental conservation. Moreover, governments are more accountable to their citizens and can ensure that policies are in line with the national interest.

On the other hand, it is also suggested that NGOs play a crucial role in addressing social issues due to their flexibility, adaptability, and ability to respond quickly to emerging problems. Unlike governments, which may be bogged down by bureaucracy and political considerations, NGOs can focus on specific issues without being constrained by broader political agendas. In addition, NGOs often have access to local knowledge and networks that enable them to design and implement tailored solutions to local problems. For example, grassroots organizations may be more effective in reaching vulnerable populations and providing support in ways that government agencies cannot.

Taking both perspectives into account, it can be concluded that NGOs indeed play a significant role in addressing social issues. While governments should maintain their primary responsibility for tackling these problems, they should also recognize the unique contributions of NGOs and work collaboratively with them to develop comprehensive and effective solutions. By leveraging the strengths of both sectors – government resources, infrastructure, and authority on one hand, and NGO flexibility, adaptability, and local knowledge on the other – a more holistic approach can be taken to addressing social issues that ultimately benefits all stakeholders involved.

Overall, it is important to acknowledge the role of NGOs in resolving various social issues while also recognizing the crucial role governments play in this process. By fostering collaboration and partnership between these two sectors, a more effective and sustainable approach to tackling social problems can be achieved.

Score: Band 8.5

The essay presents both sides of the argument effectively, providing well-reasoned explanations for each perspective. The conclusion is thoughtful and offers a balanced solution to the issue at hand. Grammar, punctuation, and coherence are generally excellent, with only a few minor errors that do not significantly impact the overall score.
