Carbon dioxide (CO2) from human activities dissolves in seawater to form carbonic acid, which reacts with calcium ions to create more acidic water. This process, known as the solubility pump, is relatively slow and irreversible on a human timescale. Additionally, the deep ocean, where CO2 is stored, takes thousands of years to mix with surface waters, further complicating any potential reversal of ocean acidification.
