IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: "Is society becoming more or less tolerant of diversity?"
Model Answer:
In recent years, the world has become increasingly diverse due to factors such as globalization, immigration and advancements in technology. This essay will discuss whether or not society is becoming more tolerant of this diversity, considering various aspects including social attitudes, legal frameworks, and cultural exchange programs.
On one hand, it can be argued that society has become less tolerant of diversity. For instance, the rise of nationalism and populism in many countries around the world has led to a growing intolerance towards immigrants and other minority groups. Furthermore, instances of discrimination and hate crimes against people from different ethnicities or religions have been on the rise, indicating a decline in social tolerance.
On the other hand, there are also reasons to believe that society is becoming more tolerant of diversity. Legislation aimed at protecting the rights of minority groups has been introduced in numerous countries, reflecting an increased awareness and acceptance of different cultures, religions and lifestyles. Additionally, cultural exchange programs have been established between nations, facilitating mutual understanding and fostering tolerance among diverse communities.
In conclusion, whether or not society is becoming more tolerant of diversity largely depends on the context in which it is examined. While there are signs of growing intolerance in certain areas, progress has also been made through legislative changes and cultural exchange programs. As a result, it can be said that overall, society's tolerance for diversity is gradually improving but still requires significant effort to overcome existing prejudices and biases.
