While some argue that the rise of social media and globalization has contributed to increased tolerance, others contend that these factors have actually led to greater intolerance. In this essay, I will analyze both sides of this argument, and then present my own conclusion.

On one hand, it can be argued that society is becoming more tolerant of dissenting opinions due to the rise of social media and globalization. Social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram allow people from all around the world to express their views and engage in conversations with others who may hold different perspectives. This has led to increased awareness of diverse viewpoints, fostering a greater appreciation for the importance of open dialogue and critical thinking. Additionally, globalization has facilitated the exchange of ideas and cultures, resulting in societies that are more multicultural and accepting of different beliefs and practices.

On the other hand, it can also be argued that society is becoming less tolerant of dissenting opinions. The rise of social media and globalization have given rise to echo chambers, where individuals predominantly interact with those who share their own beliefs and values. This has led to a polarized society, in which people are less likely to engage with or appreciate opposing viewpoints. Moreover, the rapid spread of information and misinformation on social media can result in the demonization of those with dissenting opinions, causing an increase in intolerance.

In conclusion, while it is difficult to definitively determine whether society has become more or less tolerant of dissenting opinions, there are arguments to be made for both perspectives. On one hand, social media and globalization have contributed to increased awareness and appreciation of diverse viewpoints; however, on the other hand, these factors have also led to a polarized society with echo chambers that foster intolerance.
