IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: "Is society becoming more or less divided along cultural lines?"
Model Answer:
In recent years, there has been a growing concern about the increasing division among societies based on their cultural lines. This division can manifest itself in various ways, such as through social media platforms, political affiliations, and even personal relationships. Some argue that this divide is caused by an increase in globalization, which brings people from diverse backgrounds together, while others claim it is a result of rising nationalism and xenophobia. In this essay, I will examine the factors contributing to this division and whether or not it is becoming more prevalent.
Firstly, the rise of social media platforms has significantly impacted how people interact with one another. With platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, individuals are exposed to a vast array of cultural perspectives and ideas. While this can be beneficial in promoting understanding and tolerance, it can also exacerbate existing divisions by allowing people to engage only with those who share their views. As a result, echo chambers are formed where individuals reinforce their beliefs without being exposed to alternative viewpoints. Consequently, these digital spaces contribute to the growing divide among societies along cultural lines.
Secondly, political affiliations have become increasingly tied to one's cultural identity. For example, in many Western countries, conservative parties tend to attract voters from predominantly white and Christian backgrounds, while progressive parties gain support from more ethnically diverse communities. This link between politics and culture has led to a polarization where individuals feel compelled to align themselves with the political ideologies that resonate with their cultural values. In turn, this has created an environment in which societies are divided based on their cultural affiliations.
Lastly, rising nationalism and xenophobia have also contributed to this division among societies along cultural lines. As nations grapple with issues such as immigration and multiculturalism, there is a growing tendency for people to define their identity primarily through their nationality rather than shared values or beliefs. This nationalistic sentiment often leads to negative attitudes towards those from other cultures and a resistance to embracing diversity. Consequently, societies are becoming more divided along cultural lines due to these exclusionary ideologies.
In conclusion, it is evident that factors such as social media platforms, political affiliations, and rising nationalism have contributed to the growing division among societies based on their cultural lines. While globalization has undoubtedly brought people from different backgrounds together, it has also exposed individuals to diverse perspectives and ideas. As a result, echo chambers are formed where people reinforce their beliefs without being exposed to alternative viewpoints, leading to an increasingly polarized world. To mitigate this issue, it is essential for societies to promote tolerance and understanding while fostering open dialogue between different cultural groups.
