From an environmental perspective, the meat industry is one of the leading contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and water consumption. For example, livestock production accounts for approximately 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, primarily due to methane released during digestion and manure decomposition (FAO). Additionally, vast tracts of forest are cleared to create pastures or grow feed crops, leading to habitat loss and biodiversity decline. Furthermore, the meat industry requires significant amounts of water for animal consumption, irrigation of feed crops, and cleaning waste lagoons. This reliance on freshwater resources is not sustainable given that nearly half of the world's population already faces water scarcity.
From an ethical standpoint, there are also concerns regarding the treatment of animals in factory farms. Intensively farmed animals often live in cramped and unsanitary conditions, which can lead to disease outbreaks and high mortality rates. Fortunately, there are alternatives to traditional meat-based diets that could help reduce the environmental impact and ethical concerns associated with the industry. For instance, plant-based diets can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, land use, and water consumption when compared to a meat-centric diet (Bajza et al., 2017). Moreover, alternative protein sources such as lab-grown meat, insects, or cultured cells could help mitigate the environmental footprint of meat production.
