IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic:"Is technology exacerbating or alleviating environmental problems?"
Model Answer:
In recent years, the role of technology in addressing environmental issues has become a subject of increasing debate. While some argue that technological advancements have led to greater resource consumption and pollution levels, others contend that these innovations are essential for mitigating the effects of climate change and preserving the environment. This essay will examine both perspectives before concluding which viewpoint holds more merit.
On one hand, it is evident that certain technological developments have contributed significantly to environmental degradation. The mass production of motor vehicles, for instance, has led to a sharp increase in greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change. Similarly, advancements in agriculture, such as genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and pesticides, have had detrimental effects on biodiversity. Moreover, the manufacturing of electronic devices requires significant amounts of energy and raw materials, which can be environmentally damaging if not managed responsibly.
On the other hand, technology has also played a crucial role in alleviating environmental problems. Renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbines have become increasingly popular, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. Furthermore, advancements in waste management, such as recycling technologies and biodegradable materials, have helped reduce landfill waste. Lastly, innovations in transportation, such as electric cars and high-speed trains, offer more sustainable alternatives to traditional modes of travel.
In conclusion, while it is true that certain aspects of technology have exacerbated environmental issues, other applications have proven instrumental in combating these problems. Therefore, it would be unfair to attribute all technological developments as contributing factors to environmental degradation. Instead, the key lies in implementing responsible and sustainable practices within the development and use of technology.
