Pollution in freshwater ecosystems primarily stems from two sources: point sources and non-point sources. Point sources include discharge from factories, sewage treatment plants, and agricultural runoff. Non-point sources are more diffuse, arising from activities such as deforestation, urbanization, and the overuse of fertilizers and pesticides. Both types of pollution have significant consequences for freshwater ecosystems.

The most apparent impact of water pollution on freshwater ecosystems is the decline in water quality.
