Task 2 Writing: Some people argue that governments should prioritize conservation over economic development, while others believe that economic growth is more important. Discuss both these viewpoints and give your own opinion.
Model Answer:
In recent times, there has been an increasing debate regarding the priority that governments should assign to conservation in comparison with economic development. While it is true that economic progress can bring about significant advancements in a nation's standard of living, this must be carefully balanced against the importance of preserving the environment and natural resources. In this essay, I will discuss both viewpoints and present my own opinion on this matter.
On one hand, proponents of prioritizing economic development argue that a thriving economy can lead to an improved quality of life for citizens. Economic growth can create employment opportunities, reduce poverty, and lead to better healthcare, education, and infrastructure. For instance, rapid industrialization in countries like China and India has lifted millions of people out of poverty and provided access to essential services. Moreover, these nations have been able to invest in environmental protection measures as a result of their economic growth.
On the other hand, conservationists emphasize that the degradation of the environment due to unsustainable development can lead to long-term consequences for both the ecosystems and human societies. The loss of biodiversity, deforestation, and pollution are just some examples of environmental issues that have arisen from rapid economic growth. These consequences can ultimately impact human health, food security, and the availability of natural resources, which can hinder future development prospects.
In my opinion, it is essential for governments to strike a balance between conservation and economic development. While it is true that economic progress is necessary to improve living standards, it should not come at the expense of irreversible damage to the environment. Governments should implement sustainable development policies, which focus on meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
In conclusion, both conservation and economic development are vital aspects for a nation's progress. It is the responsibility of governments to ensure that they prioritize both equally in order to maintain ecological balance while also driving economic growth. By adopting sustainable development practices, nations can achieve long-term prosperity without compromising the environment.
