These spaces not only provide recreational opportunities for city dwellers but also play a crucial role in improving air quality. There are several ways in which urban green spaces contribute to better air quality:

Firstly, plants in green spaces absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) and release oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. This helps to reduce CO2 levels in the atmosphere, which is a significant contributor to climate change and respiratory problems in humans. Moreover, trees and other vegetation can filter out harmful pollutants such as sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are produced by vehicles and industries.

Secondly, green spaces act as natural air-cleaning systems by trapping dust particles and absorbing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are emitted from various sources, including paints, solvents, and motor vehicle exhausts, and can contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone. The presence of green spaces helps reduce these levels, which in turn, improves overall air quality.

Despite their numerous benefits, establishing urban green spaces can be challenging due to several factors. One major challenge is the availability of land for such projects. In densely populated cities, finding suitable locations to create green spaces is difficult, especially since open spaces are often used for residential or commercial purposes. Additionally, financial constraints can hinder the creation and maintenance of urban green spaces. Establishing these areas requires investment in infrastructure, staffing, and ongoing upkeep.

In conclusion, urban green spaces have a significant impact on air quality by absorbing pollutants, trapping dust particles, and reducing CO2 levels. However, challenges such as limited land availability and financial constraints may hinder the establishment of these spaces. To ensure that cities continue to thrive while maintaining good air quality, it is essential for urban planners and policymakers to prioritize the creation and maintenance of green spaces in their city planning efforts.
