IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: The importance of social cohesion in a multicultural society
Question:
"Some people believe that maintaining social cohesion in a multicultural society is vital for its stability and harmony, while others argue that it is not necessary. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion."
Model Answer:
Social cohesion refers to the degree of connectedness, solidarity and interpersonal trust among diverse groups within a society. In a multicultural society, social cohesion becomes particularly important due to the diversity in culture, ethnicity, religion, language, and values that different groups bring along with them.
Some individuals argue that maintaining social cohesion is not necessary for a multicultural society's stability and harmony. They believe that cultural diversity itself can lead to tolerance, understanding and acceptance among different groups, thereby promoting a harmonious society. Moreover, they assert that the freedom of expression, as well as individualism, can create an environment where people respect and accept each other’s differences, even without any explicit effort towards social cohesion.
On the other hand, many experts stress on the importance of social cohesion in a multicultural society. They argue that it is essential for ensuring the stability and harmony within such a society. Social cohesion can help create an environment where different groups can interact and understand each other's cultures and traditions. This understanding leads to mutual respect, cooperation, and shared goals, which are necessary for the stability of any society. Furthermore, social cohesion also encourages the development of common values, norms, and identity, thereby fostering a sense of belonging among all members of the society, regardless of their cultural backgrounds.
In conclusion, while it is true that cultural diversity itself can promote tolerance and understanding in a multicultural society, social cohesion plays an even more significant role in ensuring stability and harmony within such a diverse society. Therefore, efforts should be made to promote social cohesion by encouraging interaction among different groups, fostering mutual respect, and developing shared values and norms.
Overall, the candidate's argument is well-structured, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs presenting both sides of the argument, and a conclusion that presents their own opinion. The vocabulary used is also quite advanced, making this a band
