This essay will examine both perspectives and provide a balanced assessment of whether society is becoming more or less engaged in political activism.

On one hand, it can be argued that society is indeed becoming more engaged in political activism due to advancements in technology and increased accessibility of information. With social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, individuals have the opportunity to share their views and opinions on a global scale. This democratization of information has allowed marginalized groups to raise awareness about pressing issues, thereby fostering greater political engagement from diverse populations. Moreover, the rise of digital activism has led to the emergence of grassroots movements such as Black Lives Matter and Me Too, which have garnered widespread support and sparked important conversations around social justice and gender equality.

However, there are also compelling reasons to believe that society is becoming less engaged in political activism. The rise of populist and nationalist movements has led to a polarization of opinions and a fragmentation of the public sphere. As individuals increasingly align themselves with specific ideological camps, they may become less open to engaging with opposing viewpoints and more likely to dismiss dissenting opinions as illegitimate or even "fake news." Furthermore, traditional institutions such as political parties, labor unions, and non-governmental organizations have experienced a decline in membership and influence. This erosion of civil society has led to the rise of single-issue campaigns that often lack the long-term commitment and strategic planning necessary for effective political activism.

In conclusion, while there are strong arguments to be made for both increased and decreased levels of engagement in political activism, it is important to recognize that the current landscape is complex and multifaceted. Societies may be experiencing a decline in traditional forms of political activism, but the rise of digital activism presents new opportunities for grassroots movements to challenge established power structures and promote social change. Ultimately, whether society is becoming more or less engaged in political activism depends on how effectively we can harness the potential of new technologies while maintaining the vitality and cohesion of our civil societies.
