In this essay, I will examine the impact of cultural appropriation on indigenous communities, focusing on three aspects: loss of identity, commercialization, and perpetuation of stereotypes.

Firstly, cultural appropriation can lead to a loss of identity for indigenous communities. When elements from their culture are adopted by dominant groups without due respect or understanding, the original meaning and significance are often lost. This not only results in the erosion of the group's unique heritage but also contributes to the homogenization of cultures. For example, traditional Native American headdresses have been co-opted by non-indigenous people in various fashion trends, losing their original symbolic and spiritual significance.

Secondly, cultural appropriation can result in the commercialization of indigenous culture. Dominant groups often adopt aspects of marginalized cultures for aesthetic or financial reasons without considering the historical context or social implications. This can lead to the commodification and exploitation of indigenous art, crafts, and traditions. For instance, the popular use of dreamcatchers – a symbol originally significant to Native American culture – by non-indigenous people as home decorations has contributed to the commercialization of this sacred item.

Lastly, cultural appropriation perpetuates stereotypes about indigenous communities.
