IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic:"Is society becoming more or less concerned about income inequality?"
Model Answer:
In recent years, there has been a growing awareness and concern regarding income inequality within societies across the globe. This shift in societal perspective can be attributed to several factors, such as increased accessibility to information, greater connectivity through social media, and more powerful advocacy groups that raise public awareness about this pressing issue.
On one hand, income inequality has been exacerbated by a variety of factors, including globalization, automation, and the rise of the gig economy. Globalization has led to a widening gap between high-income earners and low-income earners, as multinational corporations take advantage of cheaper labor markets in developing countries. Automation has also played a significant role in creating a more unequal distribution of wealth, as advanced technologies displace lower-skilled workers while simultaneously creating opportunities for highly skilled individuals. The gig economy has further contributed to income disparities, as the rise of freelance work and independent contractors often leads to inadequate compensation and lack of benefits for these workers compared to traditional employment.
On the other hand, there are signs that society is becoming more concerned about income inequality. For instance, activist movements such as "Occupy Wall Street" and political campaigns like Bernie Sanders' presidential bid have raised the issue of income inequality to prominence in public discourse. Additionally, research and data on this topic, such as the Gini coefficient and World Inequality Database, have increased transparency and understanding of the extent and consequences of income inequality. As a result, governments and policymakers around the world have begun to address this issue through progressive taxation, minimum wage laws, and social welfare programs.
In conclusion, while the factors contributing to income inequality remain persistent, there is evidence to suggest that society is becoming more concerned about this pressing issue. This heightened awareness has led to increased public discourse, activism, and policy interventions aimed at addressing income disparities and promoting a more equitable distribution of wealth.
