Here is a potential IELTS Writing Task 2 question:

"Income inequality is an increasing concern in today's society. Discuss the impact of income inequality on society, both negatively and positively."

Model Answer:

The ever-growing gap between the rich and the poor has been a subject of great debate, particularly due to its potential implications on social stability. In this essay, I will discuss the negative and positive impacts of income inequality on society, in terms of economic growth, social mobility, and overall societal harmony.

On one hand, income inequality can have detrimental effects on a nation's economic growth. This is due to the fact that the wealthier sections of society often control more significant portions of resources, including capital, technology, and labour. Consequently, this leads to a situation where the wealthy continue to amass wealth at an accelerated rate, while those in lower-income brackets struggle to maintain their standard of living. As such, this unequal distribution of wealth can stifle economic growth as it fails to foster an environment conducive to innovation and entrepreneurship. Moreover, income inequality also undermines social mobility, as those from less privileged backgrounds may find it increasingly difficult to rise out of poverty, thus reinforcing the cycle of inequality.

However, one cannot overlook the potential positive impacts that income inequality can have on society. For instance, it is argued that a certain level of income disparity can act as an incentive for individuals to work harder and strive for success. This competitive environment may incite the creation of new industries and stimulate innovation. Furthermore, the wealthier sections of society often contribute more significantly to philanthropic endeavours, which can have a positive impact on underprivileged communities.

In conclusion, while income inequality presents a myriad of challenges for modern societies, it is essential to recognize its potential benefits as well. A delicate balance must be struck between fostering economic growth and ensuring social equity in order to create a harmonious society that caters to the needs of all its citizens.

As an IELTS examiner, I would provide a Band Score of 8 for this response due to the coherence, logical structure, and effective use of appropriate examples and counterarguments in addressing the question.
