Topic: The importance of reducing carbon emissions from transportation.
Question: Some people argue that the reduction of carbon emissions from transportation is a minor issue compared to other environmental problems, while others believe it is a crucial step in mitigating climate change. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion on the matter.
Model Answer:
In recent years, there has been an increasing concern regarding the impact of human activities on the environment. Among various environmental issues, the reduction of carbon emissions from transportation has emerged as a critical topic of discussion. Some argue that it is a relatively minor issue when compared to other pressing environmental concerns, while others assert that it is an essential step in combating climate change. In this essay, both perspectives will be discussed, and a personal viewpoint on the matter will be presented.
On one hand, it can be argued that the reduction of carbon emissions from transportation is indeed a minor issue when compared to other environmental problems such as deforestation, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity. The burning of fossil fuels in transportation contributes significantly to air pollution and global warming; however, it may not be the most critical source of greenhouse gas emissions. According to a study by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the transport sector accounts for about 15% of total global CO2 emissions, while agriculture, forestry, and other land use account for approximately 24%. In this context, it can be contended that reducing carbon emissions from transportation is important but not as crucial as addressing other sources of pollution.
On the other hand, proponents of the view that reducing carbon emissions from transportation is a vital aspect of climate change mitigation argue that the transport sector's role should not be underestimated. Rapid urbanization and an increasing demand for mobility have led to a surge in the number of vehicles on roads worldwide. The World Bank estimates that the global stock of motor vehicles reached 1.2 billion in 2017, with an annual growth rate of around 3%. As a result, the transport sector's emissions are projected to increase significantly if no action is taken. In addition, transportation plays a vital role in connecting people and goods across regions, making it a critical enabler of economic activities. Consequently, any disruption in the transport system due to climate change could have far-reaching consequences on the global economy and social fabric.
Considering both perspectives, it can be concluded that reducing carbon emissions from transportation is indeed an essential step in mitigating climate change. Although other environmental issues such as deforestation and water pollution may seem more critical at first glance, the transport sector's role in facilitating economic activities and connecting people cannot be overlooked. As a result, efforts should be directed towards promoting sustainable modes of transportation, investing in clean energy alternatives, and implementing policies that encourage the reduction of carbon emissions from the transport sector.
In terms of IELTS scoring standards, this answer would likely receive an overall
