IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: Discuss the impact of cultural globalization on indigenous languages.

Model Answer:

In recent years, the world has witnessed an unprecedented level of cultural globalization. This process has had a profound impact on the status and survival of indigenous languages around the globe. While cultural globalization has led to increased exposure and recognition for some indigenous languages, it has also contributed to their decline in other cases. In this essay, I will discuss both the positive and negative effects of cultural globalization on these unique languages.

On one hand, cultural globalization has helped to raise awareness about the rich linguistic diversity that exists within our world. This increased recognition has led to a greater appreciation for indigenous languages and has inspired efforts to document, preserve, and promote them. For instance, many governments have implemented policies aimed at revitalizing indigenous languages through education programs and media representation. As a result, some of these languages have experienced a resurgence in terms of both usage and status.

On the other hand, cultural globalization has also contributed to the decline of many indigenous languages. The dominance of global English, along with other major world languages, has led to the marginalization of indigenous languages in various aspects of life. In particular, younger generations are increasingly inclined to abandon their native languages in favor of more widely spoken languages in order to improve their economic prospects and social mobility. This shift has resulted in a decline in the number of speakers and a loss of linguistic diversity.

In conclusion, cultural globalization has had a significant impact on indigenous languages. While it has helped raise awareness and promote some of these unique languages, it has also contributed to their decline by marginalizing them in the face of dominant world languages. To ensure the survival and prosperity of indigenous languages, efforts must be made to balance the benefits of globalization with the need to preserve linguistic diversity and cultural heritage.
