This democratization of communication has allowed marginalized groups to be heard and given rise to grassroots activism. For example, the Arab Spring, a series of protests and uprisings that occurred across the Middle East and North Africa between 2010 and 2012, was largely organized and coordinated through social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. This demonstrated how social media can be used to mobilize people around shared goals and values.

On the other hand, the nature of political discourse on social media has been negatively impacted by the spread of misinformation. The rapid dissemination of fake news and conspiracy theories can undermine public trust in institutions and contribute to a breakdown in civil dialogue. For example, during the 2016 U.S. presidential election, false information and propaganda were widely shared on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, which may have influenced voter sentiment and behavior.

Furthermore, social media has contributed to the polarization of political discourse.
