In recent years, there has been a growing concern about the level of political activism among societies worldwide. Some argue that people are becoming more politically active, while others believe that engagement is waning. This essay will analyze the factors influencing this change and assess whether society is indeed becoming more or less engaged in political activism.

On one hand, there is evidence to suggest that political activism is on the rise. The use of social media platforms has revolutionized the way people communicate and organize protests. For example, the Arab Spring, which began with a Tunisian street vendor's self-immolation in response to police harassment, quickly spread across multiple countries. This was made possible by the rapid dissemination of information via social media and other digital tools. Furthermore, global issues such as climate change, inequality, and human rights have sparked widespread activism, with movements like Extinction Rebellion, Black Lives Matter, and #MeToo gaining international attention.

On the other hand, it is important to consider that the perceived increase in political activism may be due to greater visibility rather than a true rise in engagement. With the proliferation of digital media, events that would have previously gone unnoticed are now captured and shared globally. Moreover, the rise of populist leaders around the world has led to increased political polarization, with citizens taking sides and becoming more vocal about their beliefs. This may create an illusion of heightened activism but may not necessarily reflect a genuine increase in engagement.

In conclusion, while there are valid arguments for both an increase and decrease in political activism, it is difficult to determine the true extent of this change. Factors such as social media and global issues have undoubtedly contributed to greater visibility and awareness of activism, but whether or not this translates to a more engaged society remains uncertain. Therefore, it can be argued that both perspectives hold merit, and further research is necessary to accurately gauge the current state of political activism worldwide.
