The impact of ocean acidification on marine life is multifaceted and far-reaching, affecting various species in different ways.
Firstly, ocean acidification has a detrimental effect on calcifying organisms, such as mollusks (e.g., oysters, clams) and coral reefs. These organisms rely on the availability of calcium carbonate to build their shells and skeletons. As the acidity level increases, the concentration of carbonate ions in the water decreases, making it more challenging for these creatures to construct their protective structures. Consequently, the survival rate of larval stages is reduced, leading to a decline in marine biodiversity.
