In this essay, I will analyze both sides of the argument and present my conclusion on whether society is indeed becoming more or less politically polarized.

On one hand, it can be argued that society is becoming more politically polarized due to rising nationalism and identity politics. Nationalistic sentiments have been observed in various parts of the world, with politicians emphasizing the importance of putting their nation's interests first. This has led to a "us versus them" mentality, where people are quick to label others as enemies based on their nationality or political affiliation. Additionally, identity politics have emerged as a powerful force in contemporary society, with individuals increasingly identifying themselves with certain groups and adopting the ideologies associated with those groups. As a result, political discussions tend to revolve around issues that affect specific communities rather than broader societal concerns. This trend has undoubtedly contributed to a more polarized political landscape.

On the other hand, it is also possible that society is not becoming more politically polarized but merely appears to be due to the impact of social media and the 24-hour news cycle. In today's world, people have access to an unprecedented amount of information and can quickly share their opinions on various platforms. While this has facilitated open dialogue and allowed for a wider range of perspectives to be heard, it has also given rise to echo chambers where individuals only engage with those who share their views. In conclusion, while there are valid arguments on both sides, it can be said that society is indeed becoming more politically polarized due to the rise of nationalism and identity politics. However, it is also essential to recognize the role social media and the 24-hour news cycle play in perpetuating this trend. To address the growing political divide, efforts must be made to foster understanding and collaboration between different groups, as well as promote critical thinking and informed discussions that transcend nationalistic and identity-based narratives.
