IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: The importance of social cohesion in times of crisis

Model Question: Some people argue that strong social cohesion is essential for a society to effectively deal with crises. Others, however, believe that individual actions and resilience are more important than collective efforts. Discuss both sides of the argument and give your own opinion.

Model Answer:
In today's interconnected world, societies face various types of crises ranging from natural disasters to economic downturns and health pandemics. The significance of social cohesion in times of crisis has been a subject of debate among scholars and policymakers. This essay will discuss the importance of collective efforts versus individual actions and resilience in tackling crises, and provide a conclusion based on the analysis.

On one hand, proponents of strong social cohesion argue that societies with high levels of social cohesion are better equipped to manage crises effectively. This is because people living in closely-knit communities tend to share resources, knowledge, and mutual support during difficult times. For instance, in the wake of a natural disaster, individuals who have strong ties with their neighbors may receive assistance from them in the form of food, shelter, or emotional support. Moreover, a cohesive society is more likely to develop effective policies that address the root causes of crises and implement long-term strategies for recovery. In this view, collective efforts are critical for overcoming adversity and fostering resilience within a community.

On the other hand, critics of social cohesion argue that individual actions and resilience play a more significant role in coping with crises. According to this perspective, self-reliance, adaptability, and resourcefulness are essential qualities for individuals to navigate through challenging situations. For example, during an economic recession, people who possess strong entrepreneurial skills or have diversified sources of income may be better positioned to weather the storm. Moreover, individuals with a strong sense of resilience can overcome personal setbacks and contribute to the overall recovery of society. In this view, relying on collective efforts might hinder innovation and slow down the process of recovery.

In conclusion, while both social cohesion and individual actions are important in times of crisis, it is argued that a balance between the two is necessary for effective crisis management. Strong social cohesion facilitates the sharing of resources and mutual support during difficult times, but individual resilience and adaptability can also contribute significantly to societal recovery. Ultimately, a society's ability to cope with crises depends on its capacity to strike a balance between collective efforts and individual actions while fostering a sense of unity, compassion, and innovation among its members.
