IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: "Discuss the impact of social media on mental health."

Model Answer:

In today's modern world, social media has become an integral part of our lives. While it offers numerous benefits in terms of communication and staying connected with friends and family, there is a growing concern about the potential negative effects of excessive use of social media on mental health. This essay will examine both sides of this issue: the positive impact of social media on mental health and the negative consequences it can have.

On one hand, social media can positively influence mental health by providing support networks and helping individuals feel less isolated. For example, online forums and support groups allow people suffering from various mental illnesses to connect with others who share their experiences. This sense of belonging and understanding can alleviate feelings of loneliness and depression. Moreover, social media can be a powerful tool for raising awareness about mental health issues and encouraging open conversations about mental health. Campaigns and hashtags that promote self-care and self-awareness can be beneficial in promoting positive mental health practices.

However, there are also several ways in which excessive use of social media can negatively impact mental health. Firstly, the constant comparison with others' seemingly perfect lives on social media can lead to feelings of envy, low self-esteem and dissatisfaction with one’s own life. This phenomenon, known as FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), can create anxiety and stress in users who feel they are missing out on enjoyable experiences. Additionally, the addictive nature of social media may result in users spending excessive amounts of time online, which can lead to sleep deprivation, increased stress levels and a decline in overall mental well-being.

In conclusion, while social media has the potential to positively influence mental health by offering support networks and raising awareness about mental health issues, it is crucial that individuals use these platforms responsibly. By being mindful of their usage and setting healthy boundaries, users can minimize the negative impact of social media on their mental health and maximize the benefits it offers.

Overall band score: Band 8

This essay presents a balanced view of both positive and negative impacts of social media on mental health and supports its argument with relevant examples. The language used is complex, accurate and cohesive. However, there are a few grammar errors that slightly affect the overall quality of the essay.
