IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: Should schools provide free breakfast and lunch for all students?
Model Answer:
In today's world, where the number of children experiencing hunger is on the rise, the issue of whether schools should provide free breakfast and lunch for all students has become a matter of great concern. There are two main sides to this argument; those who believe that providing free meals can improve the academic performance of students and help reduce childhood obesity, while others argue that it may lead to an increase in school budgets and promote a sense of entitlement among students.
On one hand, it is argued that providing free breakfast and lunch for all students can have a positive impact on their overall health and well-being. Many children from low-income families often go without proper nutrition, leading to a range of health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and anaemia. By offering free meals at school, these children would be able to receive the necessary nutrients for healthy growth and development. Moreover, research has shown that students who eat breakfast regularly tend to perform better academically than those who do not. In this regard, providing free meals can boost students' concentration levels, cognitive abilities, and ultimately their academic achievements.
On the other hand, opponents of free school meals argue that this initiative may result in an increase in school budgets, which could lead to cuts in other essential programs such as extracurricular activities, arts education, or teacher training. They contend that schools should focus on improving the quality of education rather than providing meals for students. Additionally, some believe that offering free meals might foster a sense of entitlement among students, as they may come to expect everything to be provided for them without any effort on their part.
In conclusion, while there are valid arguments against providing free breakfast and lunch for all students, the potential benefits in terms of improved health and academic performance outweigh the drawbacks. As such, it is crucial that schools and policymakers consider implementing this measure to ensure that all children receive the necessary nutrition they need to thrive both academically and personally.
