IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: The role of technology in addressing climate change.

Question: To what extent can technology be considered a key factor in combating climate change, and how effective are existing technological solutions in mitigating its effects?

Model Answer:

Technology has been at the forefront of global efforts to combat climate change. While it is important to recognize that other factors such as government policies, public awareness, and individual actions also play a significant role, the development and implementation of new technologies have shown great promise in mitigating the effects of climate change. In this essay, I will discuss two key areas where technology has made a notable impact: renewable energy sources and carbon capture and storage.

Renewable energy sources have emerged as one of the most effective solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal power offer clean alternatives to fossil fuels and can help reduce our reliance on non-renewable resources. Governments worldwide are investing heavily in research and development of renewable energy technologies, leading to advancements in efficiency and cost-effectiveness. For instance, the rise of solar panels and wind turbines has made these sources increasingly competitive with traditional energy sources.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is another promising technology that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by capturing carbon dioxide from power plants and industrial processes before it is released into the atmosphere. Although CCS is still in its early stages, it has shown potential for significantly reducing carbon emissions. The development of advanced CCS systems and their integration with existing infrastructure are crucial steps toward realizing this technology's full potential.

Despite these advancements, there are still challenges to overcome. Scaling up the use of renewable energy requires massive investments in infrastructure, and public support is necessary to ensure a smooth transition from fossil fuels. Additionally, carbon capture and storage technologies must be further developed to become more efficient, cost-effective, and widely available.

In conclusion, technology has been a key factor in addressing climate change, with renewable energy sources and carbon capture and storage showing great potential in mitigating its effects. While there are still challenges to overcome, the continued development and implementation of these technologies offer hope for a sustainable future.

Score: Band 9 - The essay demonstrates a high level of competence in both grammar and vocabulary. It provides relevant and detailed explanations, with appropriate use of cohesive devices to link ideas and present a well-structured argument.
