On one hand, there are strong arguments supporting the notion that it is the government's duty to ensure affordable housing for all citizens. Access to adequate housing is a fundamental human right, as stated in numerous international agreements and conventions. Governments have a responsibility to protect and promote this right. Providing affordable housing can also lead to social cohesion, as it reduces disparities among different income groups, thereby creating a more inclusive society. In addition, when the government invests in affordable housing projects, it stimulates economic growth by providing jobs and increasing demand for goods and services.

On the other hand, opponents of universal access to affordable housing argue that it is not within the scope of government responsibility. They claim that the free market should be allowed to determine the availability and affordability of housing, as this encourages innovation and efficiency. Governments can instead focus on creating policies that regulate the housing market and ensure fair competition among developers and landlords.
