Task 2 Writing Topic: The importance of reducing carbon emissions from transportation
Question: Some people argue that reducing carbon emissions from transportation is essential for environmental protection. Others believe that this focus should be placed on other areas of life, such as manufacturing and agriculture. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion on the matter.
Model Answer:
It is true that transportation plays a significant role in contributing to carbon emissions globally, and reducing these emissions from the sector is crucial for environmental protection. However, it is also essential to focus on other areas of life like manufacturing and agriculture, which have a substantial impact on the environment. In this essay, I will discuss both views and provide my own opinion on the matter.
On one hand, it can be argued that reducing carbon emissions from transportation is of utmost importance due to its significant contribution to global warming. The transport sector accounts for about 14% of total global greenhouse gas emissions, with road transport alone contributing around
75% of these emissions. As the world's population grows and urbanization continues, the demand for personal mobility and freight transportation is expected to rise, leading to an increase in carbon emissions if no action is taken. To mitigate this problem, various strategies such as promoting public transportation, encouraging carpooling, and investing in electric vehicles can be employed.
On the other hand, it can be argued that focusing on other sectors like manufacturing and agriculture would yield more significant environmental benefits. For instance, according to the IPCC, the manufacturing sector accounts for about 21% of global greenhouse gas emissions, while agriculture contributes to around 24%. Implementing sustainable practices in these sectors, such as reducing energy consumption, promoting recycling, and adopting eco-friendly farming methods, can have a more significant impact on environmental protection. Moreover, addressing the environmental issues in these sectors can lead to co-benefits like improved public health, job creation, and overall economic growth.
In conclusion, while reducing carbon emissions from transportation is essential for environmental protection, it is equally important to focus on other areas of life such as manufacturing and agriculture. A comprehensive approach that encompasses all significant contributors to global warming is necessary for achieving sustainable development and environmental conservation.
